Samista Jugwanth, Zutari Technical Director: Water, was recently a guest on the American-based Water Foresight Podcast, discussing the Future of WASH (Water, Sanitation & Hygiene) with host Dr. Matthew Klein.

 

Samista is a Technical Director in the Water market, based in the eThekwini region, and a cum laude graduate who holds a MSc. in Civil Engineering from the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal. She is a multi-faceted engineering lead with nearly 15 years in the field and experience in treatment and process engineering, hydraulics, wet service design, water strategy and planning studies, project design, and construction management.  

Beyond pioneering in Zutari, Samista holds multiple additional roles, which include being an Emerging Fellow with the Association of Professional Futurists, where she serves as an administrator and contributing writer. A fellow for TechWomen, an American initiative run by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, that aims to empower, connect, and support the next generation of women leaders in STEM. She is a Business Development Committee Member for FIDIC Africa. Samista also supports her alma mater as an Industry Advisory Board Member for Civil Engineering and an external examiner for the final year civil engineering design and dissertation projects.  

In the podcast, Samista discusses the water, sanitation, and hygiene challenges developing countries continue to face. Billions of people in these countries lack access to clean water and safe sanitation, which has severe consequences on the health of children and public health. She highlights these issues and explains how wastewater can be a valuable resource. She also stresses the importance of staying motivated to tackle these challenges to ensure a healthy and sustainable future.
