United Nations (UN) Climate Change and Risk Assessment

Helping African countries to develop climate-change scenarios and risk assessments.

Client

United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON)

Project date

February 2020 - October 2023

Since the ratification of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change in 2016, Zutari has focused its advisory market in Africa on providing climate services to clients. The company has accelerated efforts to build strategic partnerships across the region and consolidated the advisory team’s expertise in carbon footprint analysis, climate modelling, and vulnerability assessments.
This focus has earned Zutari growing recognition in the market, leading to various appointments, including the City of Johannesburg Climate Change Adaptation Plan (CCAP), which provided the opportunity to apply and refine the team’s expertise successfully.

The opportunity

Following these achievements, Zutari was engaged by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), through the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), to assist several African countries in developing nationally owned climate change scenarios and risk assessments. These are based on best available techniques and data and will serve as the foundation for national and sub-national climate change adaptation planning.

What we did

UNEP, the leading global environmental authority within the United Nations system, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development. Its work spans seven thematic areas: climate change, disasters and conflicts, ecosystem management, environmental governance, chemicals and waste, resource efficiency, and environment under review.

Through this collaboration, Zutari played a pivotal role in helping countries across Africa build robust, data-driven climate change scenarios. This work supports long-term planning and resilience, ensuring that adaptation strategies are grounded in sound scientific and policy-based frameworks.
Zutari supported UNEP in shaping climate change risk assessments that inform sustainable national adaptation planning across Africa.

The outcome

This groundbreaking appointment positioned Zutari at the heart of climate adaptation policy formation in Africa. The project has provided valuable insights into participating countries’ policy directions, allowing Zutari to align its services and expertise with an expanding and increasingly critical market.

Through its work with UNEP, Zutari continues to demonstrate leadership in climate resilience and sustainability across Africa. By helping countries plan for and adapt to climate change, Zutari is contributing meaningfully to the continent’s journey toward a more sustainable and climate-resilient future.

This prestigious UNEP assignment is a significant strategic opportunity to build and strengthen relationships with governments across the African continent, allowing us to grow our eminence on climate change adaptation.
