2012

Saadiyat Island is a remarkable 27 km² natural island located just 500 metres off the coast of Abu Dhabi. It has been developed into a premier destination for tourism, leisure, culture, and luxury living. The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort is a cornerstone of this transformation, forming part of a broader master plan that includes the future Louvre Abu Dhabi and Guggenheim museums.

The opportunity

The development of the resort required a comprehensive engineering solution to support its scale and complexity. The project presented challenges such as unstable ground conditions, demanding structural requirements, and evolving client needs, including the late expansion of a 3,000-seater banquet hall.

What we did

Zutari provided full geotechnical and structural engineering services, including:

  • Design of roads, stormwater infrastructure, and bulk earthworks

  • Full-time construction supervision

  • Management of drawing production and review

  • Adaptation of designs to accommodate late-stage client changes

  • The roof structure of the banquet hall required innovative engineering to span 50.35 metres, support high loads, and limit deflection to ensure the smooth operation of acoustic partitions. The geotechnical team addressed several metres of compressible and liquefiable soil, stabilising the ground to mitigate seismic risks and ensure safe excavation and foundation conditions.
To manage the scale of the project, Zutari divided the work among dedicated engineering teams, maintaining tight control over each aspect of the design and construction programme.
The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort features a 3,000-seater banquet hall with a complex roof span engineered to meet acoustic and structural demands.

The outcome

The resort officially opened in February 2012, featuring:

  • 377 luxury rooms

  • A 3,000-seater banquet hall

  • Seven apartment blocks with 259 units

  • A 6,000 m² retail component

Zutari’s engineering expertise ensured the successful delivery of a landmark development that contributes to Saadiyat Island’s reputation as a global cultural and leisure destination.

“Zutari’s innovative engineering and project management were instrumental in delivering a resort of this scale and prestige.”
