The opportunity

In preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, OR Tambo International Airport embarked on a major infrastructure upgrade across its network. The key component of this development was the creation of a new Central Terminal Building, a pivotal link between the domestic and international terminals and a connector to the Gautrain station and multi-storey parkade.

The project demanded a future-forward design that would meet global aviation standards, while being built within an active airport environment.

What we did

Zutari was appointed to provide comprehensive solutions across civil, structural, mechanical and wet services disciplines for the CTB and Terminal A1/A2.

We were responsible for the elegant yet complex concrete and glass structure, including the visually striking Y-shaped columns and signature glass-and-aluminium façade system. Our mechanical engineering scope included the design and implementation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems tailored for high-traffic flow.

Throughout construction, we worked closely with the client and contractor to minimise disruption, maintaining full airport operations while advancing the build.

More than just a terminal, the CTB is a statement of Zutari’s capability to deliver world-class infrastructure on a global stage.

The outcome

The CTB has transformed the airport experience at OR Tambo, enhancing passenger flow and operational efficiency. Spacious and light-filled, it redefines what high-capacity terminals can feel like; efficient yet human-centred.

This project has not only become a national benchmark for integrated airport infrastructure, but also achieved national recognition:

  • Winner, CESA AON Engineering Excellence Awards – Projects over R100 million (2009)

  • Winner, Construction World’s Best Projects Award – Professional Services (2009)

  • Commendation, Fulton Awards – Building Project (2009)
