Kangnas Wind Farm Connection Works

Designing one of South Africa’s first outsourced renewable energy transmission grid connection projects.

Client

South Africa’s Department of Energy

Project date

July 2018 - August 2022

Zutari was appointed as the grid connection design engineer by the lead electrical contractor for the 140 MW Kangnas Wind Energy Facility (WEF), located 52 km from Springbok in the Northern Cape. As an Eskom-approved design and implementation consultant, Zutari was responsible for the completion of detailed grid connection designs for this pioneering renewable energy project.

The opportunity

The Kangnas WEF was identified by South Africa’s Department of Energy during the fourth round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) as a preferred bidder site. The project forms part of South Africa’s growing renewable generation portfolio, helping to diversify the national energy mix and drive sustainable power development.

What we did

Zutari’s design services covered the full grid connection scope, including:

  • Power line turn-ins and the design of the transmission substation.

  • Technical assistance to the electrical contractor for the Eskom distribution and transmission works during construction.

  • Complete design and implementation of the Kangnas 132 kV switching station.

  • A 14 km 132 kV interconnecting overhead line between Kangnas and Groeipunt substations.

  • The 132/220 kV Groeipunt main transmission substation and the 220 kV overhead line linking to the Eskom grid.

  • A 64 km all-dielectric self-supporting (ADSS) fibre connection.

  • Design and upgrading of associated telecommunication towers.

In addition, Zutari conducted insulation coordination and earth grid studies to ensure a safe operational environment across substations and transmission lines. The team also developed detailed protection and control designs using newly approved Eskom Transmission protocols.
Zutari continues to work closely with the client to resolve technical challenges and ensure accurate implementation throughout construction.

The outcome

The Kangnas Wind Farm connection will power over 100 000 households and significantly strengthen South Africa’s renewable energy capacity. Once fully commissioned, the project will offset thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions annually and contribute to local skills development and economic upliftment in nearby towns.

Through technical leadership, close collaboration, and a commitment to sustainable impact, Zutari continues to play a vital role in connecting renewable energy projects like Kangnas to South Africa’s national grid, advancing the country’s clean energy transition.

Projects like Kangnas prove that engineering excellence and renewable energy innovation can power a more sustainable future for South Africa.
