Gabbro Terminal Expansion

Leading bulk ports experience to bring Qatar’s infrastructure vision to life.

Client

Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC)

Project date

2017

To support Qatar’s ambitious infrastructure development programme ahead of the FIFA 2022 World Cup™, Qatar Primary Materials Company (QPMC) undertook a major expansion of its Port of Umm Sa’id terminal. The goal was to increase the annual throughput of gabbro from 16.6 million tonnes to 30 million tonnes, ensuring a reliable supply of building materials for the country’s construction sector.

The opportunity

QPMC needed to nearly double the port’s capacity to meet the growing demand for gabbro, a key construction material. This required a strategic approach to engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), with a focus on performance, efficiency, and integration across the supply chain.

What we did

Drawing on decades of experience in bulk port infrastructure, Zutari provided:

  • Advanced Simulation Modelling: Evaluated the impact of the new design on the entire supply chain, identifying necessary changes for upstream (quarries and shipping) and downstream (consignees) partners.

  • EPC Advisory: Focused on optimising throughput and integrating new terminal facilities with existing logistics processes.

  • Stockyard Efficiency Planning: Recommended operational improvements, including a 21-day cargo collection window to maintain unloading capacity and inform fee structures.

  • Stakeholder Alignment: Facilitated collaboration across all parties to ensure the infrastructure met strategic goals.

  • Global Team Collaboration: A local team of 14 in Qatar was supported by over 100 international colleagues, ensuring world-class delivery.

The expanded Gabbro Terminal ensures a steady supply of building materials to support Qatar’s infrastructure boom.

The outcome

The project successfully increased the terminal’s capacity to 30 Mtpa, securing Qatar’s supply of gabbro and supporting its construction industry. The expansion earned multiple accolades in 2017, including:

  • Bulk Commodities Port/Terminal of the Year

  • Port/Terminal of the Year – Middle East

  • Port/Terminal Software/Operating System of the Year (Global Ports Forum)

  • Winner of the Construction Innovation Awards Qatar (Construction Business News)

The Gabbro Terminal Expansion is a testament to engineering excellence, strategic foresight, and collaborative delivery. Zutari’s role in this landmark project helped realise Qatar’s infrastructure vision, ensuring long-term resilience and efficiency in the supply of essential construction materials.

A key contributor to our success was our commitment to the client’s success. By showing them other possible options to their plan that were in their best interest, we built a relationship based on mutual trust and respect.
