Project date

The City of Cape Town’s Energy and Climate Change Directorate – Training commissioned Zutari to develop an innovative virtual reality (VR) training simulation. The goal was to train students to switch off a high-voltage (HV) substation safely, one of the most hazardous tasks in the electrical field.

The opportunity

Working with high-voltage equipment presents significant health and safety risks. Traditional training methods can be costly and limited in scope, as they often rely on classroom instruction or controlled on-site demonstrations. VR presented a powerful alternative, one that could deliver hands-on, immersive training without putting anyone in danger.

What we did

Zutari created a detailed VR training simulation replicating every step of the HV switching process. Every element was carefully modelled, from the panels, switches, and indicator lights to the on-site documentation operators must use during the procedure. Even the dialogue between the operator and the control centre was authentically reproduced, ensuring trainees experience realistic communication protocols and scenarios.
The VR simulation accurately replicates real-world substation environments, allowing operators to train safely and effectively.

The outcome

Feedback from both operators and students has been overwhelmingly positive. The VR training has proven to be not only safer but also more cost-effective than traditional methods. Its immersive nature allows participants to learn faster, retain information better, and gain confidence in navigating the exact environments where they will one day work.

The City of Cape Town’s VR electrical training project demonstrates how cutting-edge digital tools can revolutionise traditional training methods. By combining engineering precision with creative technology, Zutari helped make one of the most dangerous operations in the energy sector safer, smarter, and more effective.

VR provides a safe but lifelike environment to train operators, a cost-effective, immersive tool that transforms learning.
