The digital team had the opportunity to engage with nearly every discipline, unit, and market, ranging from civil engineers to business communication specialists and even eager high school students to see what the future of engineering careers would entail.
We showcased a nexus of technology, processes, and people across a range of different domains:
- Emma van Nierop: GIS solutions spread across South Africa, including asset management and water design projects.
- Louis De Klerk/Richard Matchett: demonstrating the hardware and software for rapid and cost-efficient digitation of environments and site locations. A VR station for users to interact with and navigate through a large-scale point cloud.
- Riaan Fourie/Richard Matchett: mapping out the integrated phases of a project’s lifecycle, ranging from digital site surveys, stakeholder engagements, data platforms and management, design, construction activities and handover for asset operators.
- Corné van Diemen: replication of municipal electrical networks for modelling and management, ultimately translating into improved service delivery for communities.
- Kenney O’Kennedy: The growing capabilities of IoT sensor network deployments and the associated integration of sensory data for infrastructure projects.
- Andre Broekman: The philosophy behind Computational Design (CoDe) and project showcasing and raising awareness of no-code/low-code and high-level programming solutions.
Event highlights
- The broad range of interactions, questions, and networking with an eager delegation of staff and visitors was the primary highlight. We had the opportunity to present to the Zutari executive board, a delegation from Exxaro and students representing two local high schools.
- Another young graduate from another firm even expressed his interest in joining Zutari owing to the novelty of the projects and digital solutions employed.
- Furthermore, the event served as a successful trial to test GitHub’s Codespace capabilities, where users were able to interact with a Python application on their smartphones and provide their contact details – the CoDe discussions engaged approximately 80-100 people during the event.
